Hall Bazaar is the best-known shopping street of old Amritsar, running from the Town Hall area towards Hall Gate, with garment shops, jewellers, footwear stores, sweet shops and cloth merchants packed shoulder to shoulder. Behind and above the shopfronts, narrow lanes lead to old houses, godowns and flats, and traders often live close to their stock.
Access is the main constraint. The street is crowded from morning until night, vehicles are restricted in parts of the walled city, and a goods vehicle cannot enter most lanes. We park on the nearest permitted road and carry goods by hand or handcart, sometimes over a long distance. We check access rules at booking, send extra loaders and plan a longer window. Early morning, before shops open, is the best time.
Shop stock is packed by shelf and lot. Garments and cloth are wrapped in plastic, cartons are labelled, and counters, racks and display fittings are dismantled and re-assembled at the new place. Jewellery and valuables are moved with the owner present and sealed cartons. Households living above shops have steep staircases and heavy furniture, which we dismantle, wrap in blankets and carry with a larger crew.
