KK Nagar: a planned colony with wide roads and big markets
KK Nagar was developed as a planned residential colony, and its wide, regular roads and numbered sectors and avenues make navigation easy. The Rajamannar Salai and the roads near the Ayyappan temple, along with the Arcot Road side, form the main arteries. Compared with T Nagar and Ashok Nagar, the streets here are broader, and a medium truck can enter most of them without trouble.
Housing consists of individual houses, many of which have been rebuilt as apartments of three or four floors, and some larger apartment complexes. The common pattern in the rebuilt houses is a stilt floor for parking with flats above, a small lift in newer ones and a staircase in older ones. We ask whether the lift can take a standard-size almirah or a double-door fridge, because that decides whether a pulley is needed.
The area has plenty of hospitals, coaching centres and shops, and the roads near the Sivan Park and the KK Nagar market are busy through the day. We schedule loading before eleven in the morning for the smoothest run. Common moves are to Ashok Nagar, Vadapalani, Virugambakkam and Saidapet, with a steady number of customers leaving for Porur and OMR in search of newer homes. KK Nagar is also well placed for intercity trips, since the Inner Ring Road and the Poonamallee High Road are both nearby.
Practical planning for KK Nagar
KK Nagar is a planned neighbourhood with numbered sectors, large government housing and a lot of tree cover, adjacent to Ashok Nagar and Vadapalani. Streets are mostly wide, and trucks reach the door easily. The Arcot Road side is congested, particularly near the Vadapalani temple on festival days, and we avoid those dates. Many homes are in apartment blocks of four or five floors without lifts, so the crew carries items on foot. Typical destinations are Ashok Nagar, Saligramam and Vadapalani.
