Tambaram: a railway town on the edge of the city
Tambaram is a suburban railway town at the southern end of the city, with the air force station, the sanatorium and several colleges nearby. Many households here are families settled for decades, so the homes are often full of belongings collected over years: grain bins, steel vessels, wooden furniture, boxes of books and sometimes a prayer room that needs careful handling.
The Tambaram railway station and the GST Road shape the town. The station area and the market are crowded all day, while the residential colonies of East and West Tambaram are quieter but have narrow turnings, and a few are on slopes. We usually check the approach before sending the truck and decide whether a smaller vehicle should carry the goods from the lane to the main road.
Tambaram is also a popular starting point for people moving south towards Madurai, Trichy and beyond, since the GST Road is the main route.
