The Clock Tower, or Ghanta Ghar, stands at the centre of old Jodhpur beside the bustling Sardar Market, in the shadow of Mehrangarh Fort. The market and the lanes around it sell spices, textiles, handicrafts, sweets and everyday goods, and old havelis and family homes rise above and behind the shops.
Access is the main constraint. The surrounding lanes are narrow, crowded with scooters, handcarts and visitors, and many are one-way. A full-size truck cannot enter, so we park on the nearest open road, ask for a landmark at booking, such as a known shop or a gate, and carry goods by hand or handcart. We send extra loaders, plan a longer window and begin at first light, before the market opens.
Shops get stock packed by shelf and lot, with spices in sealed containers, textiles wrapped in plastic and handicrafts padded and crated. Counters, racks and display units are dismantled and re-assembled. Old havelis hold heavy furniture, carved doors, brass vessels and family heirlooms, which we wrap in blankets, carry in parts, list carefully and move with the family present.
