Chaura Bazaar is the oldest and busiest market of Ludhiana, running close to the Clock Tower, with shops selling hosiery, cloth, garments, shoes and household goods. Behind the shopfronts, narrow lanes lead to old houses, godowns and flats, and traders often live above or behind the shop they run.
Access is the main constraint. Lanes are only a few feet wide, handcarts and rickshaws crowd them and a full-size truck cannot enter. We park on the nearest open road and carry goods by hand or handcart, sometimes over a long distance. We send extra loaders, plan a longer window and start at first light or after the market closes at night.
Shop stock is packed by shelf and lot. Garments are wrapped in plastic, cartons are labelled, and counters, racks and mannequins are dismantled and re-assembled at the new place. Godowns are moved with extra hands and a written list. Households living in old buildings have steep staircases and heavy furniture, which we dismantle, wrap in blankets and carry with a larger crew.
