Girgaon: chawls, temples and the Chowpatty side
Girgaon is one of the oldest Marathi neighbourhoods in Mumbai, near Girgaon Chowpatty, Charni Road and the Thakurdwar road. It is known for its old wadis, temples, theatres and the Ganesh immersion procession that ends at the Chowpatty beach. The lanes are narrow, the buildings are old and the sense of community is strong.
Ganeshotsav is the biggest factor in planning. For about ten days in August or September, the neighbourhood is full of pandals, processions and crowds, and the final day, Anant Chaturdashi, closes many roads. We advise customers not to move in those weeks and, if there is no choice, to start before sunrise.
Most homes are in chawls and old buildings, with wooden staircases, shared passages and little space for a vehicle. Heavy trucks stay on the main road, and the crew carries goods by hand or on handcarts through the lanes. Old houses have wooden furniture, brass items, pooja articles and trunks, and families keep them with great care. We pack them in soft wrapping and separate boxes, and the pooja items are kept together so they can be unpacked first. Typical moves are to Grant Road, Tardeo, Marine Lines and Dadar, and families who want more space often move to the suburbs, such as Borivali, Ghatkopar or Thane.
Practical planning for Girgaon
Girgaon, on the sea side of south Mumbai, is a historic residential area with old wadas, temples, Girgaum Chowpatty and narrow lanes. Roads are tight, and some are closed during festivals such as Ganeshotsav and Gudi Padwa processions, when moving is not possible. Buildings are old and have steep staircases without lifts, so we use experienced loaders and ropes. Many families have heavy furniture and pooja items, which we wrap with care. Typical destinations include Grant Road, Charni Road, Dadar and Thane, and we plan for an early start.
