Vidyavihar: station, campus and new towers
Vidyavihar is an eastern suburb between Ghatkopar and Kurla, built around the Somaiya Vidyavihar campus and the Vidyavihar railway station. The Eastern Express Highway and the LBS Marg run nearby, and Mumbai’s newer towers have been rising along the Vidyavihar West and East sides. It is a convenient area for people who commute by train, with fast connections to the central business districts.
The railway line divides the suburb. Vidyavihar West is more built up, with old buildings, markets and the campus, while the East has newer, larger towers. Crossing the line requires a bridge, which is narrow and congested at peak hours. We choose the side of the line for the truck depending on the destination.
Societies in the towers have the standard rules: lift booking, deposit and daytime hours. Older buildings in the west have no lift. Students and staff of the campus form a large part of the population, and moves peak at the start and end of the academic year, in June and May. Small student moves are quoted by the room. Typical moves are to Ghatkopar, Kurla, Vikhroli and Chembur. Longer moves towards Pune or Nashik start on the Eastern Express Highway, with an early morning departure to avoid the traffic near Mulund.
