Yerwada: a dense east-bank neighbourhood with a long history
Yerwada is on the east bank of the river, with the Yerwada Central Prison, the Gunjan Chowk, Shastri Nagar and the Airport Road side as key reference points. It has an urban feel, with mixed communities, markets, schools and small industries, and the Nagar Road runs along its edge. Over the years, it has attracted professionals who want to live near Kalyani Nagar and the airport at lower rents.
The roads are among the busiest in east Pune. Gunjan Chowk and the Nagar Road junctions are infamous for their jams, and vehicles are constantly moving between the airport, Viman Nagar and the city. We schedule early moves, preferably before eight. The lanes of Shastri Nagar and the old settlements are narrow, with stalls and parked vehicles, so we use a small tempo for the last stretch.
The buildings range from old four-storey blocks with no lifts to a number of new, well-maintained societies.
