Bapu Bazaar is the main shopping street of Udaipur, running from the Clock Tower side of the old city, with fabric stores, jewellers, shoe shops, handicraft sellers and general stores. Residents from across the city shop here, and so do many visitors, so the street is lively and crowded from late morning.
Crowds and narrow access shape the schedule. The street is too busy for a goods vehicle to halt, so we schedule moves for early morning or after closing and keep the vehicle outside the busiest stretch. The crew carries goods by hand or handcart, and a supervisor coordinates with neighbouring shopkeepers. Weekends and festival days are the busiest, so we avoid them.
Shops get stock packed by shelf and lot, with fabric wrapped in plastic, jewellery moved with the owner present in sealed cartons and glass items padded. Counters, racks and display units are dismantled and re-assembled. Flats above shops have steep stairs, so furniture is dismantled and carried in parts, with railings and walls padded.
