Moving in and out of Old Town
Old Town is the historic quarter of Visakhapatnam on the harbour side, a tangle of narrow lanes around the old port, the Jalari Peta fishing community, mosques, temples and markets. Families have lived here for generations, in old houses with courtyards, steep stairs and thick walls, and the area carries the scent of the sea and of fish markets.
Access is the main constraint. Lanes are only a few feet wide, handcarts and scooters crowd them, and trucks cannot enter. We park on the nearest open road and carry goods by hand or handcart, sometimes over a hundred metres. We send extra loaders, plan a longer window and start at first light. Festival days bring crowds, and we avoid them.
Old houses carry heavy furniture, brass vessels and many belongings. We dismantle where possible, wrap everything in blankets and protect walls and doors. Fishing families need special care for nets, cold boxes and equipment, which we pack separately. Small shops and workshops are moved after closing, with stock listed and labelled.
