Adyar: older bungalows, river-side streets and careful packing
Adyar is one of Chennai’s long-established residential neighbourhoods, bounded by the Adyar River on one side and Sardar Patel Road and Lattice Bridge Road on the others. It has a lot of older bungalows and low-rise flats that were built when families kept bigger furniture, and that is what shapes a move here: teak cots, large almirahs, grandfather clocks, piano and heavy dining tables are common.
These pieces are solid but not easy to move around corners, so the crew arrives with foam, thick blankets and extra hands, and dismantles what can be dismantled before it goes down the stairs. In many of the older buildings the staircase is narrow, the lift is small or absent, and the compound gate is not wide enough for a large truck, so we plan for the last stretch to be done by trolley.
Adyar also has a large student and young-professional population around the institutes and hospitals, and for them a move is often a single room with a mattress, a desk and a few cartons. We can send a smaller vehicle and a crew of two for that, which keeps the cost reasonable. Common destinations are Besant Nagar, Mylapore, Guindy and Thiruvanmiyur, and the roads between them are busy at rush hour but easy early in the morning.
Practical planning for Adyar
Adyar mixes old independent homes near Gandhi Nagar and Besant Nagar roads with large apartment blocks along Lattice Bridge Road and Sardar Patel Road. Traffic at the Adyar signal, the Madhya Kailash junction and the bridge over the river slows trucks sharply, so we avoid nine to eleven in the morning. Many homes have teak furniture and old brass lamps, which we wrap individually. If your building is close to the river, ask the secretary about any restriction on vehicle height under tree branches before the truck arrives.
