Besant Nagar: sea air, quiet avenues and weekend crowds
Besant Nagar, or Bessie as locals call it, is laid out on numbered avenues running towards Elliot’s Beach, with the Ashtalakshmi Temple and the Velankanni church shrine as its best-known landmarks. The pace is calm on weekdays and busy on weekends and festival evenings, when visitors fill the beach road, the temple area and the eateries along the avenues. A move planned for a Saturday evening can easily be held up for an hour.
The salt air is the real packing issue. Metal furniture, iron cots, steel almirahs, bicycles and two-wheelers pick up rust quickly near the sea, and electronics can suffer if they are left exposed. We wrap metal parts in plastic, keep appliances in padded boxes and avoid placing anything directly on the truck floor. Wooden furniture gets blankets so the polish is not scratched.
Housing includes older independent houses with gardens and compound walls, small apartment blocks with stilt parking, and a few newer buildings on the main roads. Most streets are wide enough for a medium truck, but corner turns between the avenues are tight and cars are parked in the evenings, so mornings work best. People moving out usually go to Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery, while retirees sometimes move to the quieter suburbs further south.
