Koyambedu: market, bus terminus and a metro hub
Koyambedu is best known for its wholesale market complex and the large Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, with the Koyambedu metro station connecting the two lines. Trucks carrying vegetables, fruits and flowers arrive in the early hours, and the roads around the market are crowded from midnight until mid-morning. A moving truck loaded at four in the morning would be in the middle of that.
For that reason, our planning is the opposite of what you might expect: we recommend a late-morning start, once the market rush has eased and before the bus terminus fills for the afternoon. The residential side of Koyambedu, including the areas around Jai Nagar, Rohini and Mogappair’s southern edge, is quieter and has a mix of apartments, small houses and rented rooms occupied by traders and market workers.
Many people who work in the market live in compact homes with a lot of household equipment, so the load can be large for the number of rooms. We ask for a video call to plan the number of boxes, and bring tarpaulin during the monsoon because the roads near the market flood easily. Common moves are to Anna Nagar, Vadapalani, Villivakkam and Ambattur. Koyambedu is also a good starting point for long-distance moves, since the Poonamallee High Road and the Chennai Bypass are very close.
Practical planning for Koyambedu
Koyambedu hosts the large wholesale market complex and the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, and trucks crowd its approaches from before dawn. Moving in the early morning is not practical because of the market vehicles, so we plan for late morning, avoiding the market's peak. The metro station and the Poonamallee High Road keep the area busy all day. Residents live in apartments and houses in nearby Arumbakkam, Vadapalani and Mogappair. We confirm gate rules and the exact entrance before sending the truck.
