Chittaranjan Park: markets, festivals and a close community
Chittaranjan Park, widely called CR Park, is a planned colony in south Delhi, originally settled by families from East Bengal and still known for its Bengali culture, its markets (Market No. 1 and Market No. 2), its fish market and the large Durga Puja celebrations held each year in October. The colony is divided into blocks and pockets, with houses and flats arranged around parks and local markets.
The puja season matters for any move. In the weeks around Durga Puja, pandals, processions and crowds change the traffic pattern, and some lanes are closed for days. We recommend avoiding October for a move from CR Park, or at least planning the day with local knowledge. Evenings are crowded around the markets, so mornings are best throughout the year.
Houses are mostly three- or four-storey builder floors, often owned by families who have lived there for decades. Each floor is often a separate household with its own set of furniture, books and kitchen items, and the volume can be higher than expected. Staircases are narrow, and doorways are small. Many families keep heirlooms, brass items, books and artworks, which we pack with soft wrapping and in separate boxes. Typical moves are to Kalkaji, Greater Kailash, Lajpat Nagar and Nehru Place. The Outer Ring Road and the Mathura Road give quick access to the highways towards Noida, Faridabad and Gurugram.
Practical planning for Chittaranjan Park
Chittaranjan Park, known as CR Park, is a Bengali-heritage colony in south Delhi with markets numbered 1 to 3, the Kali Mandir and Pandal-lined streets in Durga Puja. During the puja days in October, roads are blocked and crowds are heavy, so we do not schedule moves then. Blocks are numbered and houses are three or four storeys with narrow staircases. Parking is tight, and the markets are busy in the evening. Typical destinations include Greater Kailash, Kalkaji and Nehru Place.
