Sarojini Nagar: the market, government colonies and Kidwai Nagar
Sarojini Nagar in south Delhi is best known for the Sarojini Nagar Market, one of the city’s most popular shopping destinations for clothes and accessories, and for the government housing colonies around it, which include old quarters and the redeveloped colonies near Kidwai Nagar and Netaji Nagar. Many central government employees live here.
The market sets the rhythm of any move. From late morning until night, the lanes around it are full of shoppers, and vehicles are forced to crawl. We therefore load early, usually from six in the morning, and leave before the shops open. The market is closed on Mondays, and the roads are easier then, so a Monday move is a good option.
Government quarters involve formalities. The allotment letter, the vacating date and the inspection are fixed, and sometimes there is little notice before a transfer. We pack the day before the inspection, if required, and keep the final day for loading and handing over. The redeveloped colonies have new towers with lifts and parking, and the older ones have walk-ups with several floors. Typical moves are to Safdarjung Enclave, RK Puram, Lodhi Colony and Laxmibai Nagar. We ask for the quarter number and the block when you book, as many blocks look alike.
Practical planning for Sarojini Nagar
Sarojini Nagar is known for its bustling market, which is crowded at all hours, and for the government colony surrounding it. Residential blocks are government flats with staircases and no lifts. Trucks have to park far from the market. We plan an early start before the market opens. Typical destinations include Safdarjung Enclave, RK Puram, Lodhi Road and Gurugram. Government employees' moves may involve official transfer schedules, and we are used to short notice.
