Deccan Gymkhana: Pune’s old heart of education and culture
Deccan Gymkhana is one of Pune’s traditional cultural and educational centres, bordered by FC Road, JM Road, Prabhat Road and the Deccan Queen’s home station. It is home to the Deccan Gymkhana Club, Fergusson College, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and a large number of bookshops, cafés and old wadas. Students, faculty, writers and retired professionals make up much of the population.
The neighbourhood is old and dense. Many of the buildings are decades-old apartment blocks or wadas with wooden staircases, high ceilings and small lifts. Moving large furniture in such buildings is a skill, and we use straps, blankets and padded door frames. Bookshelves are common, and we pack books in small boxes, since a full carton can be extremely heavy.
Prabhat Road has numbered lanes that are quiet, tree-lined and narrow, with limited parking. The FC Road and JM Road areas are crowded with students and shoppers, especially in the evenings, and the street is often closed for events. We advise morning moves and avoid the days of university exams and festival processions. Typical destinations are Shivajinagar, Erandwane, Kothrud and Sadashiv Peth. Students and visiting scholars often need to move only a few boxes, which we quote by the room.
