Moving in and out of Assi
Assi is the southern end of the Varanasi ghats, where the Assi Ghat and the lanes behind it have become home to students, researchers, yoga teachers, cafe owners and foreign visitors alongside long-time Banarasi families. The neighbourhood is lively from sunrise, when morning aarti and yoga classes begin, until late evening.
Lanes are narrow and crowded, and the road to the ghat is closed to vehicles at certain hours. A full-size truck cannot reach most addresses, so we park on the nearest open road and carry goods by hand or handcart. We ask for the lane, the house name and a landmark at booking, such as a cafe or a temple, and choose a smaller vehicle where one can enter. Mid-morning, after the morning rush, is usually best.
Student and visitor moves are common. A bed, a mattress, a table, a fan, a stove and cartons of books can be moved at a fixed price covering loading, transport and unloading. Rented rooms and flats get furniture dismantled and wrapped, kitchens packed in labelled cartons and fragile items padded. Cafes and guesthouses move furniture, kitchen equipment and linen in numbered cartons.
Typical destinations from Assi are Lanka, Dashashwamedh and Bhelupur. In the monsoon, the river rises and floods the lower lanes near the ghat, so we follow water-level reports and keep a spare day. Festival days bring heavy crowds.
