Moving in and out of Dashashwamedh
Dashashwamedh is the best-known ghat area of Varanasi, where the evening Ganga aarti draws large crowds every day. Steps lead down to the river, and above them lie guesthouses, small temples, boat operators' offices, shops and the houses of priests and families who have lived by the ghat for generations.
Access is by foot. The approach lanes are steep, narrow and crowded with pilgrims and tourists, and a goods vehicle cannot come close. We park at the nearest permitted point and carry goods by hand or handcart down narrow lanes and steps. Evening aarti hours are completely unworkable, so we plan moves for early morning, before the crowds arrive, and keep a longer window.
Guesthouses and hostels move furniture, beds, linen and kitchen equipment in numbered cartons, floor by floor. Families in old houses get furniture dismantled and wrapped, utensils and pooja items packed by hand and steep staircases protected. Priests' families and long-time residents appreciate a respectful, unhurried crew, and sacred items are packed separately with soft padding.
Typical destinations from Dashashwamedh are Godowlia, Assi and Chowk. In the monsoon, the Ganga rises and covers the lower steps, and during floods some lanes are blocked, so we follow water-level reports and keep a spare day. Festival days such as Dev Deepawali and Ganga Dussehra are extremely crowded, so we advise avoiding them. A written estimate follows a short visit and lists labour, vehicle, materials and any permission charge, and we confirm the crew and arrival time by phone the evening before.
