Moving in and out of Chowk
Chowk is one of the oldest market quarters of Varanasi, set in the dense heart of the old city, with lanes of silk and brocade merchants, brass and copper dealers, sweet shops, jewellers and general stores. Traders have run the same shops here for generations, and many live in the floors above.
Lanes are very narrow, often shared by pedestrians, cows, handcarts and scooters, and no goods vehicle can enter. We park on the nearest open road, ask for a landmark at booking, such as a temple, a sweet shop or a well-known trader, and carry goods by hand or handcart. We send extra loaders, plan a longer window and begin at first light, before the lanes fill up.
Shop stock is packed by shelf and lot, with silk and brocade wrapped in plastic and tissue, brass and copper items cushioned and listed, and cartons labelled. Shelves, counters and weighing scales are dismantled and re-assembled. Old houses carry heavy furniture, brass utensils, pooja items and storage trunks, which we wrap in blankets, carry in parts and list carefully.

Summers are very hot and the monsoon makes old lanes slippery, so we carry covers and keep a spare day.
