Documents to give the transporter
- Copy of the registration certificate (RC).
- Copy of the car insurance policy.
- Your ID proof, such as Aadhaar, a driving licence or a passport.
- An authority letter, if someone other than the owner will hand over or receive the car.
If the car has a loan, the bank holds the original RC, so keep the bank’s details ready, as the transporter may ask for a copy of the loan papers.
A new state means a new registration
A car kept in another state for more than 12 months has to be registered there, and an NOC from your current RTO is needed for that. Apply for the NOC before or soon after the move so the re-registration is not delayed. The rules and fees are set by the transport authorities, so confirm them with your RTO.
Before you hand over the car
- Wash the car so existing scratches and dents are easy to see.
- Take clear photos from all sides, plus the odometer and the fuel gauge.
- Leave only a little fuel in the tank.
- Remove valuables, documents, toll tags and loose items from the cabin and boot.
- Fold the mirrors, put in the antenna and note any pre-existing damage on the pickup sheet.
At delivery
- Check the car against your photos and the pickup sheet before you sign.
- Note any new damage on the delivery sheet at the time, in writing.
- Check the odometer reading; it should be close to the pickup reading.
See our car transport service for how loading and carriers work, and the charges tables on the route pages.
